A new endowed scholarship at UC Law San Francisco, created by alumni Jo Ann and Michael Montoya, both from the class of 1987, aims to open doors for future legal professionals. The couple has committed $100,000 to benefit students in the college’s Legal Education Opportunity Program (LEOP).
Inspired by Michael’s own experience as a LEOP graduate, the gift is designed to help talented students who have overcome significant life obstacles. The program supports students facing educational or economic disadvantages by providing not only admission opportunities but also comprehensive academic and professional resources throughout law school and beyond.
“We are proud to be in a position to give back,” the Montoyas stated. “UC Law SF changed our lives, and we hope this scholarship helps do the same for others.” Following prosperous legal careers in Southern California, the now-retired couple sought to create a lasting impact for incoming students.
The scholarship will directly reduce the financial burden for recipients, allowing them to focus more fully on their studies and career development. Assistant Dean Elizabeth McGriff, a LEOP alum herself, emphasized the profound difference such support makes, noting it lowers debt and increases access to a top-tier legal education.
LEOP alumni frequently credit the program with providing the essential skills, confidence, and community needed to succeed. Graduates have ascended to influential roles across the legal spectrum, from major law firms and corporate counsel offices to public service positions as judges and prosecutors. This new scholarship ensures that pathway remains open and supported for determined students for years to come.
