BOONE, N.C. — This fall, over 100 teacher's assistants, educators, and school administrators from Watauga, Caldwell, and Catawba counties will participate in a new career pathways program at Appalachian State University. This initiative is designed to tackle the pressing shortage of special education teachers in rural Appalachia.
The program, backed by a generous grant exceeding $1.4 million, aims to provide comprehensive training and support to enhance the skills of current education professionals. Participants will engage in specialized coursework and hands-on experiences that will equip them to better serve students with diverse learning needs.
By focusing on professional development and career advancement, this program seeks to create a sustainable pipeline of qualified special education teachers in the region. The initiative not only addresses the immediate staffing challenges but also fosters a long-term commitment to improving educational outcomes for students with disabilities in rural communities. This proactive approach is expected to make a significant impact on the quality of education in Appalachia.
