Schools across Arkansas now have the chance to apply for more than $690,000 in conservation education grants. The funding comes from a partnership between the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. The money is meant to help schools build programs that teach students about the state's natural resources and the importance of protecting them.
According to officials, the grants pay for conservation education programs that some schools would never be able to implement without the help. Many districts, especially in rural areas, lack the budget to add hands-on outdoor learning, field trips, or classroom materials focused on wildlife and habitat. This funding is designed to close that gap.
The program supports a range of efforts, from outdoor classrooms and garden projects to curriculum tied to local ecosystems. Schools can use the money for equipment, training, and supplies that make conservation lessons practical rather than theoretical. Organizers say the goal is to give students direct experience with the environment around them.
Applications are open now. District leaders and educators interested in starting or expanding conservation lessons are encouraged to apply before the deadline. Officials stress that the process is open to schools of all sizes, and that even modest proposals can qualify. Those who have run similar programs in the past say the grants often make the difference between an idea on paper and a real experience for students. Schools that want to take part should review the requirements and submit their proposals soon. The agencies expect strong interest this year and urge applicants to prepare their plans early.
