The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education has voted to close Glenwood Elementary School, a decision driven by long-term financial and enrollment challenges. The board first determined last October that closing at least one school was necessary. That move came after projections showed declining student enrollment for the 2026-27 school year would trigger a reduction of more than two million dollars in state funding. Officials also warned of further decreases in both enrollment and funding over the next decade, making the closure a difficult but necessary step to balance the district's budget.
The vote follows months of community meetings and public hearings, where parents and staff voiced concerns about the impact on students and neighborhoods. Glenwood Elementary, one of the district's smaller schools, has seen a steady drop in enrollment in recent years. District leaders argued that keeping the school open would stretch resources too thin across the system. The closure is expected to take effect at the end of the current school year, with students reassigned to nearby schools. Transportation and support services will be adjusted to accommodate the change. The board has not announced plans for the building itself, but officials say no decisions have been made about its future use.
