The ongoing contract negotiations between teachers unions and local school boards are doing more than settling wages. They are shaping the daily reality of classrooms across the state. Critics often argue that unions block reform, but the evidence points the other way. When educators have a real voice at the bargaining table, districts see improvements in class size, access to materials, and support staff hiring. These are not abstract wins. They show up as functioning libraries, timely repairs, and fewer teachers paying out of pocket for basic supplies.
A recent opinion letter attacked the nation's second-largest education union, claiming it has done little to improve teaching or classroom conditions. That charge lacks any supporting data. In fact, union contracts frequently include provisions for professional development, mentoring for new teachers, and safety protocols. School boards that negotiate in good faith report smoother budget planning and lower turnover. The alternative, a workforce with no collective say, leads to burnout and staffing shortages.
Negotiations are not a zero-sum game. They are a practical tool for building stable schools. Communities should judge these talks by results: smaller classes, better retention, and students who walk into a room ready to learn.
