Educator Expands Disability Access Through Two Decades of Work

For more than twenty years, Sharon Richter has worked to widen opportunities for people with disabilities, first as a classroom practitioner and now as an associate professor at the Watson College of Education. Her career has centered on a single goal: giving students with disabilities real access to learning while preparing the next generation of teachers to do the same.

Richter's approach rests on empowerment rather than accommodation alone. She trains future educators to recognize the strengths and potential of every learner, and she has built partnerships with schools and community groups to put those ideas into practice. Her students describe her as demanding but supportive, pushing them to question assumptions about disability and to design instruction that works for everyone in the room.

Colleagues credit her with shaping how the college approaches inclusive education, from course design to fieldwork placements. Over the years, her work has reached hundreds of teachers who now carry those practices into their own classrooms across the region and beyond.

Richter says the progress is encouraging but incomplete. She points to persistent gaps in resources, staffing, and expectations that still limit what students with disabilities can achieve. Closing those gaps, she argues, requires sustained effort from schools, universities, and policymakers alike, and she intends to keep pushing for it.
