More than 200 educators from across the tri-state region gathered at Iona University for the Gabelli Center for Teaching and Learning's Fall 2026 conference focused on the changing role of artificial intelligence in education.
The event brought together teachers, administrators, and technology specialists who are grappling with how AI tools are reshaping both how students learn and how instructors teach. Sessions throughout the day examined practical questions, including how to spot AI-generated work, how to design assignments that encourage critical thinking, and how to use AI as a support tool rather than a shortcut.
Organizers said the conference was created in response to growing demand from schools that are unsure how to set policies around emerging technology. Many attendees noted that their districts have been moving faster than official guidance, leaving individual teachers to make judgment calls on their own.
Workshops covered topics such as AI literacy, ethical use, and the risks of over-reliance on automated systems in grading and lesson planning. Several presenters stressed that the goal is not to ban the technology but to help students understand its limits and its biases.
The conference also gave educators a chance to share what is working in their own classrooms. Feedback from the event will be used to shape future training sessions and resources for regional schools.
