Governor Greg Abbott is asking Texas higher education officials to create a new pathway that would let students finish a bachelor's degree in three years instead of the usual four. The governor has directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to build a statewide framework for what he calls accelerated degree programs.

The idea is to give students a more direct route into the workforce while also cutting down on the cost of college. Abbott says the current system often keeps students in school longer than necessary, especially when they have already earned college credit in high school or through dual enrollment programs. He wants those credits to count more efficiently toward a degree.

The coordinating board will need to work with universities and community colleges to identify which majors could realistically be completed in three years. Not every degree would fit that timeline, but the governor is pushing for options in fields like business, technology, and health care. The board is expected to report back with a plan in the coming months.

Supporters of the move say it could save students thousands of dollars in tuition and living expenses. Critics worry that compressing four years of coursework into three could overload students or reduce the quality of their education. Some faculty members have also raised concerns about how to keep academic standards intact while speeding up the pace.

Abbott's directive is part of a broader push in Texas to make higher education more accessible and affordable. The state has already expanded financial aid programs and tried to streamline transfer rules between schools. Whether three-year degrees become a common option will depend on how colleges respond and whether employers accept the shorter timeline as equal to a traditional degree.
