Jonathan Alger to step down after 2 years as American University’s president

Jonathan Alger announced Wednesday that he will step down as president of American University, a position he has held for only two years. He plans to transition into a fellowship with America 250, a national initiative focused on democracy and civic engagement leading up to the nation's semiquincentennial.

Alger's departure comes as a surprise to many on campus, given the relatively short tenure. He took the helm in 2023, succeeding Sylvia Burwell, who led the university for six years. During his brief time in office, Alger emphasized academic innovation and community partnerships, but his presidency was also marked by challenges including campus debates over free speech and the university's response to the Israel-Hamas war.

In a statement to the university community, Alger said the decision was personal and that the America 250 fellowship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to national conversations about democratic resilience. He will remain in his role until a successor is named, with the board of trustees expected to launch a search immediately.

Faculty and student leaders expressed mixed reactions. Some praised Alger's efforts to modernize the curriculum, while others questioned the timing of his exit. The university's board chair thanked Alger for his service and expressed confidence in the institution's stability during the transition.

Alger's next chapter will involve working with scholars, policymakers, and community organizers to explore how higher education can strengthen democratic institutions. The fellowship is set to begin later this year.
