Kenai education associations express disappointment in school district’s statement

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District's recent statement expressing disappointment over a rejected health care deal has drawn sharp criticism from local education associations. Union leaders say the district's characterization of events is misleading and fails to address the real concerns of teachers and staff.

The dispute centers on a tentative health care agreement that union members voted down earlier this month. In a public statement, the district said it was disappointed by the rejection, calling the proposal a fair compromise that would have provided stable coverage while controlling costs. But representatives from the Kenai Peninsula Education Association and other labor groups argue the district's version of events leaves out key details.

Union officials say the proposed plan would have shifted more costs onto employees, including higher deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. They also claim the district did not provide enough time for members to review the full terms before the vote. "We are not opposed to finding common ground, but we will not accept a deal that puts our members' financial health at risk," one association spokesperson said.

The rejection means both sides will return to the bargaining table. The unions have called for more transparency and a renewed focus on keeping health care affordable for educators. The district has not yet commented on the union's latest response, but the standoff highlights ongoing tensions over compensation and benefits in the district.
