McMahon Calls for Renewed Focus on Patriotic Education in Schools

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has voiced strong concerns about the declining emphasis on patriotism and civic knowledge in American classrooms. Speaking during an appearance on the program "America 250: Celebrating Freedom," McMahon argued that schools must do more to instill a sense of national pride and understanding of the country's founding principles among students.

McMahon pointed to a growing gap in basic civic literacy, noting that many young people lack familiarity with the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the historical events that shaped the nation. She described this trend as troubling for the long-term health of American democracy. Without a shared understanding of the country's values and history, she warned, citizens may struggle to engage meaningfully in civic life or defend the freedoms they enjoy.

The Education Secretary did not propose specific new mandates but called on educators, parents, and community leaders to prioritize lessons that highlight American achievements and ideals. She emphasized that patriotic education should not be about blind loyalty but about fostering informed appreciation for the nation's heritage. McMahon also stressed the importance of teaching both the successes and the struggles of American history, encouraging honest but constructive discussions in classrooms.

Her remarks come as part of a broader push by the administration to reframe how history and civics are taught in public schools. Critics have raised concerns about potential politicization of the curriculum, but McMahon maintained that a balanced approach is possible. She urged schools to avoid cynicism and instead present America's story as one of ongoing progress and shared responsibility. The goal, she said, is to equip students with the knowledge and pride needed to become active, thoughtful citizens.
