In a separate city ballot, residents of Hurricane passed a critical operating levy for the city's general fund. The levy, which replaces an expiring tax, will maintain current funding levels for police, fire, and street maintenance services. City officials had warned that a failure at the polls would have forced a 15 percent reduction in public safety staffing. The measure passed with 58 percent of the vote, a relief for Mayor Linda Fields, who stated that the result ensures the city can continue its current service schedule without layoffs. Voter turnout across the county was reported at 34 percent, slightly above the average for a non-presidential election year.
