RECO Launches Continuing Education Course on Professional Liability Insurance

The Real Estate Council of Ontario has rolled out a fresh elective continuing education course aimed at helping Ontario real estate professionals get a clearer handle on the Professional Liability Insurance Program. The course is designed to walk agents through their obligations under the program and explain how it fits into the broader framework of consumer protection.

Many real estate professionals deal with insurance requirements on a daily basis but may not fully grasp the details of what the policy covers or how claims work. This new course breaks down those specifics, covering topics like policy limits, the claims process, and what happens if a mistake leads to a financial loss for a client. The goal is to reduce confusion and help agents avoid common pitfalls that could put their coverage at risk.

The course is voluntary and counts toward the continuing education credits that agents must complete to maintain their registration. RECO has structured it as a practical resource rather than a dry legal overview. Agents who take the course will come away with a better sense of how the insurance program protects both them and the consumers they serve.

Industry observers note that the timing makes sense. Real estate transactions have grown more complex in recent years, and disputes over disclosure or contract terms can lead to costly claims. By educating agents upfront, RECO hopes to reduce the number of errors that trigger those claims in the first place. The course is now available for enrollment through the council's online portal.
