The debate over education funding often centers on the wrong question. The issue isn't about a lack of money. It's about distribution. When will GrowSF even consider reality?
Across the globe, from France to San Francisco, school systems face a common challenge. Resources exist, but they rarely reach the classrooms and communities that need them most. France has long wrestled with stark inequalities between its urban and rural schools, where funding formulas often favor already privileged areas. San Francisco, despite its wealth, confronts similar disparities, with schools in underserved neighborhoods struggling while others thrive.
The core problem is not scarcity. It is how money is allocated, who makes those decisions, and whether the process reflects the actual needs of students. Bureaucratic formulas and political priorities frequently override common sense. Districts pour funds into administration while teachers buy supplies out of pocket. Buildings crumble while consultants collect hefty fees.
GrowSF, a political advocacy group in San Francisco, has weighed in on education issues, but critics argue its approach ignores the on-the-ground reality. Distribution matters more than totals. Until policymakers confront how resources are divided, throwing more money at the problem will not fix it. The question is not whether we can afford to fund schools. It is whether we are willing to fund them fairly.
