San Marcos High School Starts New Chapter in Health Care Education

San Marcos High School has officially broken ground on a facility that will reshape how students prepare for careers in health care. The project has received significant philanthropic contributions, including $1.5 million from Cottage Health and $1 million from Betty Elings Wells, giving the effort strong financial backing from community partners.

The new building will provide students with hands-on learning spaces designed to mirror real clinical environments. Classrooms and labs will support coursework in medical sciences, patient care and other health-related fields, giving students a head start on college programs and entry-level certifications. School leaders say the facility reflects growing student interest in health careers and the region's need for a well-trained workforce.

Construction is expected to move forward over the coming months, with the campus continuing normal operations during the build. District officials described the groundbreaking as a milestone years in the making, crediting families, local health organizations and longtime supporters for turning the vision into reality. When complete, the facility will expand career technical education offerings at the school and create a pipeline for students interested in nursing, emergency medicine, therapy and allied health roles. Community members gathered at the site to mark the occasion, calling it an investment in both students and the future of local health care.
