A new poll shows public satisfaction with American education has dropped to its lowest level since tracking began. Only 32 percent of adults say they are completely or somewhat satisfied with the quality of K-12 education, according to the survey released Sept. 7. That marks the weakest reading in the 27-year history of the trend.
The decline comes as concerns grow about whether students are leaving high school prepared for college or the workforce. Test scores in reading and math have slipped in recent years, and many employers report that entry-level applicants lack basic skills. At the same time, chronic absenteeism remains above pre-pandemic levels in many districts.
Parents and policymakers are also divided over curriculum, school funding, and how to address learning loss. Some states have expanded tutoring programs and summer classes, while others have focused on changing graduation requirements.
Analysts say the low satisfaction number reflects broader frustration rather than a single issue. Trust in public institutions has fallen across the board, and schools have become a focal point for political disputes. Whether the trend reverses may depend on whether measurable improvements in student achievement appear in the next few years.
