School districts shifted funds, planned for higher fuel costs for buses - Education

School systems across several regions are moving money between accounts and revising spending plans to absorb the higher price of fuel for their bus fleets. Transportation departments that once counted on stable diesel rates now face bills that can swing by thousands of dollars in a single month, forcing administrators to act before the shortfall affects daily routes.

In many cases, officials have transferred funds from maintenance reserves, supply budgets, or unused salary lines to keep buses running. Some districts locked in fuel contracts earlier than usual, hoping to blunt future spikes. Others reduced field trips, combined routes, or delayed nonessential vehicle purchases. A few have asked local boards for emergency allocations.

The pressure is not limited to fuel itself. Higher prices for tires, parts, and driver wages have added to the strain. Districts that operate their own fleets feel the cost most directly, while those using contractors often see the increase passed along through contract adjustments.

Administrators say the goal is simple: keep students riding safely and on time. But with fuel markets still unpredictable, finance teams are preparing multiple budget scenarios for the coming year. Some are weighing electric bus grants and other long-term options, though those changes take time and infrastructure that many systems still lack. For now, the focus remains on covering each tank of diesel without cutting into classrooms.
