A group of students is spending part of the school year not in classrooms but in the woods, cutting new paths and caring for the land around them. The trail building internship gives participants a chance to work with their hands while learning how forests are managed and protected.
The program is designed to show that learning can happen outside traditional settings. Students involved in the effort say the work has taught them patience, teamwork, and a deeper respect for the environment. They clear brush, shape pathways, and help maintain areas that will be used by hikers and community members for years to come.
Organizers describe the internship as a reflection of what their schools stand for. They say it shows a commitment to creating safe, supportive, and student-centered spaces where young people can grow in different ways. Instead of sitting through lectures, students gain practical skills and see the results of their labor take shape on the ground.
The experience also opens doors to possible careers in conservation, forestry, and outdoor education. For many participants, the internship is the first time they have thought about land management as a future path. By the end of the season, the trails they built will remain as a lasting sign of what students can accomplish when given trust and responsibility.
