Texas Lawmakers Review School Choice Rollout and Four-Day Week Policies

October 7, 2026 - 17:40

The Texas Senate gathered this week to hear testimony from education leaders regarding the implementation of the Texas Educational Freedom Accounts program and the growing adoption of four-day school weeks across the state. Senators spent time reviewing how well last session's laws are doing now, including the state's first ever education savings account initiative.

Education officials presented data on enrollment numbers and spending patterns under the new program. Supporters say families are using the funds for private tuition, tutoring, and curriculum materials. Critics raised questions about oversight and whether rural districts are being left behind.

The hearing also covered the rising number of districts switching to four-day instructional weeks. Superintendents from several small and mid-sized districts described the change as a necessary tool for recruiting teachers and cutting transportation costs. Some senators expressed concern about childcare burdens on working parents and the long-term effect on student performance.

Committee members pressed witnesses on accountability measures, including testing requirements and how the state tracks outcomes for students who leave public schools. Several lawmakers said they expect follow-up legislation next session to address gaps in the current framework.

No votes were taken during the hearing. The committee is expected to compile findings into a report that will guide future policy discussions on both school choice expansion and flexible scheduling options for districts statewide.
