A new initiative between the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Knox County Schools seeks to directly address the critical shortage of special education teachers in the region. The newly launched Teach Knox Fellows Program is designed to train and support a new generation of educators dedicated to this high-need field.
The fellowship provides aspiring teachers with substantial financial support, covering full tuition for a one-year Master of Science in Teacher Education program with a special education concentration. In return, fellows commit to teaching within Knox County Schools for a minimum of three years following their graduation. This pipeline model ensures that investment in their education directly benefits local students.
Beyond tuition, the program includes comprehensive mentorship and professional development. Fellows will receive guidance from both university faculty and experienced mentor teachers within the school system. This supportive structure aims to prepare educators thoroughly for the classroom and help them build successful, sustained careers. The partnership highlights a proactive approach to tackling workforce gaps, ensuring that students with disabilities have consistent access to qualified and well-prepared teachers.
