The coalition pushing the Arkansas Educational Rights Amendment has officially fallen short of the signature threshold needed to place the measure on the 2026 ballot. For AR Kids, the group leading the effort, announced Friday that it did not collect the nearly 91,000 valid signatures required by state law.
The proposed amendment aimed to reshape public education in Arkansas, focusing on increased funding for public schools, higher teacher salaries, and expanded early childhood programs. Supporters argued it was a necessary step to counter recent state policies that shifted money toward private school vouchers and charter schools.
Despite a months-long campaign that involved volunteers across the state, the group confirmed it could not meet the deadline. "We are disappointed but not defeated," a spokesperson said in a statement. The group did not specify exactly how many signatures were gathered, but acknowledged the gap was significant.
This setback means the amendment will not appear before voters in 2026. Opponents of the measure, including some conservative lawmakers, had argued it would have imposed unfunded mandates on the state budget. For now, the future of the proposal remains uncertain, though organizers hinted they may try again for a later election cycle.
