Bike New Britain is set to bring a hands-on bicycle safety program to fifth graders at Smalley School next week. The organization will run the education sessions starting Monday, May 4th, and continuing through Thursday, May 7th, each morning from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
The program aims to teach young riders the basics of safe cycling, including helmet use, hand signals, and how to navigate streets and intersections. By focusing on fifth graders, Bike New Britain hopes to build good habits early, especially as more children begin riding bikes to school or around their neighborhoods.
Volunteers from the group will lead the classes, combining classroom instruction with practical exercises. Students will have the chance to practice skills in a controlled setting before taking them onto real roads. The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote active transportation and reduce traffic risks for children in New Britain.
Bike New Britain has been active in the community for years, advocating for better bike infrastructure and offering educational programs. This week-long session at Smalley School represents one of their direct engagements with local youth, reinforcing the message that biking is not only fun but also a safe way to get around when done correctly.
