Candidates for Michigan State Board of Education Discuss Key Issues Before Election

November 3, 2026 - 03:01

Two of eight seats are open on the Michigan State Board of Education, and candidates are making their cases to voters ahead of the election on Nov. 3. The board plays a significant role in shaping statewide education policy, setting academic standards, and overseeing the distribution of funding to public schools across Michigan.

Candidates in the race have focused on a range of issues, including how to close persistent achievement gaps, improve support for students with special needs, and address the ongoing teacher shortage affecting districts statewide. Several contenders have also weighed in on the debate over curriculum transparency and how schools should handle politically sensitive subjects.

Funding remains a central concern. Some candidates argue that the state's school aid formula needs a major overhaul to direct more resources to high-poverty districts, while others emphasize accountability measures and want to ensure that additional spending translates into measurable student outcomes.

Mental health services for students have also emerged as a priority, with candidates proposing expanded counseling programs and better coordination between schools and community health providers. The candidates agree that the board must work more closely with local districts and listen to parents, teachers, and administrators when making decisions that affect classrooms.

Voters will decide the race on Nov. 3, with the results likely to influence the direction of education policy in Michigan for years to come.
