The Cherokee Nation is moving forward with plans to open its new language-focused middle school in Tahlequah this year, with classes expected to begin in the fall semester. The school is designed to immerse students in the Cherokee language and culture, building on the success of the tribe's existing immersion programs for younger children.
Officials say the school will serve students who have completed the elementary-level immersion curriculum, allowing them to continue their education in a setting where Cherokee is the primary language of instruction. The goal is to produce fluent speakers and strengthen cultural identity among the next generation.
Construction and curriculum development are reportedly on schedule, with tribal leaders expressing confidence that the school will meet its opening deadline. The facility will include classrooms designed for interactive learning, as well as spaces for traditional arts and ceremonies.
The Cherokee Nation has invested heavily in language preservation in recent years, recognizing that fluent speakers are aging and the number of young speakers remains low. The middle school represents a key step in reversing that trend by keeping students engaged with the language through their teenage years.
Community members have voiced strong support for the project, seeing it as a vital tool for keeping the Cherokee language alive. The school is expected to enroll its first class of students when doors open later this year.
