A low-cost desktop fiber extrusion device called FrED, designed and assembled entirely by students in an educational factory at MIT, is reshaping how manufacturing is taught in Mexico. The project is the result of a collaboration with Tecnologico de Monterrey, where the compact factory setup is being used to give students hands-on experience with real production processes.
The FrED system, which fits on a standard desk, allows users to melt plastic pellets and extrude them into usable fiber. Unlike traditional industrial equipment that is expensive and requires large spaces, this device is built from off-the-shelf components and open-source designs. Students at MIT first built the prototype as part of a class focused on modern manufacturing methods. The goal was to create a tool that could teach the principles of extrusion, material science, and process control without the high cost of commercial machinery.
In Mexico, the partnership with Tecnologico de Monterrey has turned the FrED factory into a teaching platform. Students there assemble the machines themselves, learning about mechanical design, electronics, and software integration along the way. The factory is not just a classroom exercise. It produces real fiber that can be used for 3D printing filament or other applications, giving students a direct link between their work and actual manufacturing output.
The project highlights a shift in engineering education. Instead of focusing only on theory, students are expected to build, troubleshoot, and improve a functioning production line. The low cost and small footprint of the FrED factory mean that similar setups could be replicated in other schools or even small workshops, making advanced manufacturing skills more accessible. The collaboration between MIT and Tecnologico de Monterrey is seen as a model for how universities can work together to prepare students for the realities of modern industry, where flexibility and hands-on knowledge matter as much as textbook concepts.
