A massive new health education complex opened in Kearney this week, drawing state leaders and medical professionals to celebrate what many called a historic milestone for rural healthcare. The facility, now the largest of its kind in the country, is designed to train doctors, nurses, and specialists specifically for underserved rural communities.
Dr. Gold, a key figure in the project, addressed the crowd with a mix of pride and relief. "Only in Nebraska, my friend. And here we are today," he said. "I mean that sincerely, because this has been tried in Kansas, in Iowa, it's been attempted elsewhere. But it took Nebraska to actually get it done."
The complex spans over 200,000 square feet and includes simulation labs, classrooms, and clinical spaces. It will serve students from multiple universities and health systems, aiming to keep graduates working in rural areas after they finish training. Organizers said the facility directly addresses a long-standing shortage of medical providers in the region, where patients often drive hours for basic care.
State officials noted that the project received bipartisan support and private donations. The building is expected to host its first full class of students this fall. For now, the focus is on what Dr. Gold called a "Nebraska solution" to a national problem.
