Rising junior will be next student member of MNPS Board of Education

A high school student will take a seat on the Metro Nashville Public Schools Board of Education, bringing a student's perspective to district-level decisions. The newly appointed member, a rising junior, will serve as the board's next student representative. This role is designed to give the student body a direct voice in policy discussions, from curriculum changes to school climate issues.

The selection process involved an application and interview phase, with the junior chosen from a pool of candidates across the district. While the student representative cannot vote on final board actions, they participate in debates, offer input during meetings, and act as a liaison between the board and the student population. The position typically lasts for one academic year.

Supporters of the program argue that having a student at the table helps adults understand how policies affect the classroom experience. The new member is expected to attend regular board meetings and committee sessions, balancing those duties with coursework and extracurricular activities. The appointment takes effect at the start of the upcoming school year.
