LAS VEGAS - A growing number of correctional facilities are offering expanded educational opportunities, and the results are generating real excitement among inmates and their advocates. For people like former inmate Veronica Peterson, the chance to learn behind bars has been life-changing.
"I have a job right now. This is the first job I've ever had that I actually like," Peterson said. She credits her time in a prison education program with giving her the skills and confidence to build a stable life after release.
The initiative, often called "College Behind Bars," provides inmates with access to classes ranging from basic literacy to college-level coursework. Supporters argue that education reduces recidivism rates and saves taxpayer money in the long run. Instead of returning to a cycle of crime, graduates find employment and contribute to their communities.
For many inmates, the classroom offers a rare sense of purpose. Teachers describe students who are highly motivated, knowing this may be their only chance to turn things around. Family members also express relief, seeing their loved ones gain skills and a positive outlook.
Critics sometimes question spending on education for incarcerated individuals, but proponents point to studies showing that every dollar invested in prison education saves several dollars in incarceration costs. For Peterson and others like her, the value is personal. "I never thought I'd be here," she said. "Now I can actually see a future."
