When does school start? Today for these Dallas ISD students

Dallas ISD welcomed students back to class two weeks ahead of schedule at 20 different campuses this morning. The early start is part of a district initiative aimed at reducing summer learning loss, a challenge that often hits low-income and at-risk students the hardest.

Instead of waiting until the traditional late-August start date, these schools opened their doors today. The program targets elementary and middle school students who benefit from a shorter summer break. By adding two extra weeks of instruction, the district hopes to keep academic skills fresh and avoid the typical slide that happens over the long vacation.

Parents dropped off children at participating schools this morning, with many expressing relief. The early start helps working families who struggle to find childcare during the final weeks of summer. For the district, the move is a direct response to years of data showing that students can lose up to two months of math and reading skills over the break.

Teachers at these campuses have been preparing for weeks, adjusting lesson plans to focus on core subjects. The district plans to monitor progress closely and may expand the early-start model to more schools next year if results show a clear improvement in student performance.
