The University of Southern Maine, in partnership with the Maine Education Policy Research Institute, is organizing a statewide assembly to shape the future of education policy. The event, scheduled for June, aims to bring together residents from every corner of the state to discuss key priorities for schools and students. Organizers are now seeking four volunteers from each of Maine's 16 counties to participate in the discussions. The deadline to sign up is May 7.
The assembly is designed to produce a clear set of recommendations that will be shared with incoming policymakers. By gathering input directly from community members, the initiative hopes to ensure that the voices of parents, teachers, and local leaders are reflected in future decisions. Participants will engage in structured conversations about pressing issues such as funding, curriculum standards, and support for educators.
This effort comes at a time when education systems across the country are grappling with challenges like teacher shortages and post-pandemic learning recovery. The Maine Education Policy Research Institute, which conducts nonpartisan research for the state legislature, will compile the feedback into a report. That document will serve as a resource for lawmakers and education officials as they craft policies in the coming years.
Volunteers do not need to have a background in education or policy. The organizers are looking for a diverse mix of perspectives, including students, parents, and retired educators. Those interested can apply through the USM website before the May 7 cutoff. The event will be held in person, with details on the exact location and schedule to be announced closer to the date.
