Michael McShane, MD, an associate professor of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, has been named the recipient of the 2026 McGraw Hill Pathfinder Award. The recognition highlights his pioneering efforts in reshaping how medical students learn outside the traditional hospital setting.
McShane's approach focuses on community-based medical education, placing students directly into local clinics and underserved areas rather than keeping them confined to academic medical centers. His model emphasizes hands-on experience with primary care, public health challenges, and the social determinants that affect patient outcomes. Colleagues say the method has not only improved clinical skills among students but also encouraged more graduates to pursue careers in rural and community medicine.
The McGraw Hill Pathfinder Award is given annually to educators who demonstrate innovation in health sciences teaching. McShane was selected for his ability to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice. In a statement, he credited the collaborative spirit of his students and community partners for the program's success.
The award comes with a grant to further develop the curriculum. McShane plans to expand the initiative to include more interdisciplinary training, pairing medical students with social workers and public health officials. He hopes the model can be replicated at other institutions facing similar shortages of primary care providers.
