For generations, the Haredi community has built its identity around the study of Torah. Young men are expected to spend years, often decades, in yeshiva, dedicating their lives to religious texts. This single-minded focus is presented as the highest calling. But it comes with a steep price. Not every young man is destined to become a great Torah scholar. And pretending otherwise harms both the individual and the community.
The system leaves little room for those who lack the aptitude or the desire for full-time religious study. Many young men struggle in an environment that does not suit them. They are pushed through a curriculum that ignores secular subjects like math, science, and English. When they leave the yeshiva world, often in their early twenties, they have no diploma, no marketable skills, and no real preparation for the workforce. The result is a growing crisis of poverty and dependency on government stipends.
Some within the community are starting to ask hard questions. They point out that the one-track system creates a class of men who cannot support their families. It also places an impossible burden on women, who often become the primary breadwinners while raising large families. The pressure to conform is immense. Those who choose a different path, whether vocational training or secular work, risk being seen as failures or outcasts.
The problem is not with Torah study itself. It is with the idea that there is only one valid path for a religious life. A healthier approach would recognize diverse talents. It would offer real options for those who are not cut out for the beit midrash. Without change, the community will continue to lose young men who could have thrived if given a chance to learn something else.
